Born in Scotland in 1847, Bell began tinkering with inventions from a young age. After graduating college, he found remarkable success as a teacher of deaf students. Bell invented the telephone in 1876, and later innovated in fields spanning from medicine to aviation.

Born in Massachusetts, on November 25, 1867, Mabel Hubbard was the second of four daughters in a well-to-do Bostonian family. She lost her hearing after a bout of scarlet fever when she was five years old, but thanks to her parents’ determination and her own spirit, she learned to lip read in several languages and remained an active participant in the speaking world.
Mabel Hubbard Bell was a tireless advocate, encouraging women to educate themselves and effect changes in various areas of society, including health, home industries, women’s suffrage, children’s labor and children’s education. She was also a highly skilled gardener.
Snapshots into the mind of a genius.
In 1876, Watson plucked a spring in one room, and the sound came through on a receiver in the other. It was a bright twang, and it sounded the same on the receiver as when Watson plucked it. This effect was of great importance to Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone idea. He sketched out a rudimentary diagram of the transmitter and receiver, and the very next day, he and Watson were experimenting on the world’s first telephone.
On the evening of March 10, 1876, Watson heard Alec’s voice emanating from the receiver in the next room, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you!”
In addition to his research and accomplishments in telecommunications, Alexander Graham Bell was also fascinated by the possibility of achieving human flight.
Bell’s aviation career spanned three decades and included over 1,200 experiments, mostly on his estate at Beinn Bhreagh in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. His aviation experiments were fruitful and produced innovative flight technologies that continue to inform how we design aircraft today.
